Unit 6: What is the Business Management Toolkit (BMT)?
The toolkit is new for this iteration of the course. Students are asked to know the SL and HL tools in the toolkit to answer exam questions, but also embed into their Internal Assessments (IA’s).
So what's it all about then?
What's the Business Management toolkit (BMT) all about?
Basically, there are several tools for each SL and HL Business Management which can be tested in the exam! It is your job to have a working knowledge of each tool and be able to know it and apply them to a given question in the exams! Luckily these course resources will help!
You will have studied them all in the run up to your exam. Some of them are qualitative and some are quantitative. For example, the SWOT or PESTLE analysis are quite simple to construct (if you have learned them), but others like the Decision Tree are not!
One good idea would be to think carefully about using some of the tools (maybe 2 / 3/ 4) in your IA in order to familiarise yourself with them first!
Basically, don’t forget the Business Management Toolkit (BMT)! The tools can be used in the exams, as well as in the Internal Assessment! This page and course resources will sketch the toolkit out for you!
In short, these course resources will help you build your knowledge of the toolkit and help you work out exactly what the BMT is and how it fits into the Business Management course!
Business Management Toolkit (BMT) in exams
If you do not use sufficient number of tools, then your marks will be capped as the examiners rubric specifically states (or looks for) which tools have been used! This page aims to help you work out how many tools from the toolkit is optimal for your own IA!
Some students will go overboard here and choose too many! Now, you’re probably thinking that it would be better to come out and state clearly, ‘exactly how many tools from the toolkit do I have to use’?
Well…sadly, there is no easy answer to this! Hopefully you’ll be able to see that no two tools are the same!
Why are the tools in the toolkit different?
Tools like STEEPLE require a lot of writing and analysis whereas other tools like the decision tree can be used more concisely!
This means that you have to choose a sensible number to score maximum points. You also have to choose wisely. How do you do that? Read the detailed post on how to write a killer IB BM IA!
Also, quality over quantity, two well used tools may score far higher than 4 poorly used tools! Don’t forget also that the word count for the IA is only 1800 words and so….if you pick too many tools from the toolkit you may not have room for much analysis (or anything else).
As a final thought on this brief post, remember that the section you are assessed on is called, ‘TTT’ (tools techniques and theories) and so you want to consider the other two ‘t’s’! You will have to choose complimentary techniques and theories that are relevant to your IA!
