Over 120,000 Citroën C3 and DS3 owners in the UK have been told to stop driving their cars after a severe safety alert over faulty Takata airbags. A serious defect caused the airbag inflators to explode, propelling metal shards into the vehicle cabin—a hazard tragically confirmed by a fatal accident in France.

The recall affects models produced between 2009 and 2016 (and some up to 2019), and owners like Lisa Shackleton are left without transport. Stellantis initially limited recalls to hot climates, believing only those airbags posed a risk. But after further incidents, it expanded the recall in April 2024, before issuing a full “stop-drive” order on 20 June across Europe. This development highlights how businesses must respond to evolving market conditions and adapt strategies—a key concept in IB BM.

Operationally, Stellantis faces a logistical headache. Airbag replacements require specialist parts and trained technicians—a major operations management challenge (Unit 5). The company has activated its network and is exploring home service options. However, customers worry about compensation and transport logistics, and insurers are offering conflicting advice.

The incident underlines how companies must maintain effective internal communication (between manufacturer, dealers, regulators) and external communication (with customers, media, government bodies). The UK’s Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency supports the stop-drive recall but hasn’t mandated a broader recall, reflecting how regulatory stakeholders influence business decision-making (Unit 2).

Stellantis describes the inconvenience as “inevitable,” but must now act swiftly to restore brand image and stakeholder confidence. The case offers students insight into ethical decision making, crisis response, and balancing operational efficiency with consumer safety.
